New to chess titles? Here is what the medals mean.

Olympiad

FIDE's team event held every two years. Countries send Open and Women's teams, and players on each board can also win individual medals.

World Youth and Cadets

World age-group titles: Cadets cover Under 8, 10 and 12; World Youth covers Under 14, 16 and 18.

World Junior

The top junior title, for players under 20.

Asian events

Asian Championship, Asian Youth, Asian Schools and the Asian Games give medals across Asia, from Under 5 up to Open.

Commonwealth

Open to Commonwealth countries, with sections by age and gender.

Rapid and Blitz

Faster time controls than classical chess, so upsets and young winners are more common.
